This is an example of how friendly and cute whales can be.

What is whaling?
Whaling is the hunting of whales for commercial, scientific or subsistence uses. Commercial whaling is when you capture whales in order to make a profit, scientific whaling is defined as lethal research whaling that is legal under the provisions of the moratorium (and is overused by the Japanese), and subsistence whaling is the hunting of whales by native peoples for cultural reasons.

This picture shows just how many whales are affected by this. There is such a huge number of whales that are hunted and this needs to be controlled. http://www.starfiretor.com/TheWhaleAndDolphinPeopleProject/jpgs/beached_whales_dolphins.jpg (no other way to cite)
Key points?
-the Japanese abuse the privilege of hunting whales for research
-the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling is in charge of limiting the amount of whaling
-the International Whaling Commission puts rules in place to limit whaling
-there has been an international whaling moratorium (ban) on whaling since 1986
Why is this a severe problem?
-whale populations were decreasing at an alarming rate in the 1900s--- some species went from populations of 275,000 to around 1000 in a short period of time
-this is decreasing at an unsustainable rate---> many species of whales are endangered and facing extinction
-whales reproduce slowly therefore their deaths can outnumber their births
This chart shows how the number of whales changed over the years; before whaling to 1994. By looking at this graph, you can see the large and very unsafe drop in whale populations. This must be controlled!

Who is most affected negatively? Who isn't interested in addressing this issue?
Whales and future generations are the most affected by this issue. Whales are essential to the marine ecosystem and without them, it would disrupt the order in all of life(through things such as throwing off the balance of the food chain), which may have an effect on future generations.
Japan and other countries who commercially hunt whales wouldn't want to address this issue because it could result in them losing a lot of money.
